Contract vs permanent hiring: which is right for your team?
Both models work — for different situations. A practical framework for choosing, with the cost and speed trade-offs employers usually miss.
Start with the shape of the work
If the work has a clear end date, a variable volume, or needs a skill you will not need again for a while, contract staffing usually wins. If the work is core, ongoing and benefits from institutional memory, hire permanently.
Count the real cost
Contract rates look higher per month but include payroll, compliance and replacement risk. Permanent hires cost less per month but carry recruitment time, notice periods and the cost of a wrong hire.
Speed matters more than people admit
A contract engineer can start in days. A permanent senior hire takes 60–90 days including notice. If a project is waiting, that gap is the most expensive line on the sheet.
